Every material gives off heat differently depending on how well it is working. A solar cell that has stopped producing runs hotter than its neighbours. A roof membrane holding trapped moisture reads cooler after sunset than the dry sections around it. A loose electrical connection heats up long before it arcs.
None of that is visible to the eye. It shows up on a thermal camera, and a drone is the fastest way to put one over every square metre of a large site without scaffolding, rope access, or a shutdown.
What Thermal Cameras Actually Catch
- Underperforming solar cells. Cracked cells, delaminated panels, and failed bypass diodes all run measurably hotter than a healthy panel under load. A single flight over a rooftop array can flag which panels are dragging down the whole string.
- Roof and facade moisture. Wet insulation holds heat differently than dry insulation. A pre-dawn thermal pass over a flat roof shows exactly where water is getting in, often years before a visible leak appears inside.
- Electrical hot spots. Overloaded breakers, loose lugs, and failing transformers heat up before they fail outright. Thermal scans of outdoor switchgear and rooftop plant rooms catch these while a repair is still routine maintenance, not an emergency callout.
- Building envelope loss. Gaps in insulation, thermal bridging at balconies, and leaking window seals all show as bright bands on a facade scan, useful for both energy audits and handover snagging.
How the Flight Actually Runs
- Timing matters more than the drone. Thermal contrast is clearest at dawn, at dusk, or after dark, when the sun is no longer heating every surface evenly. Most thermal missions are scheduled around this window rather than the client's office hours.
- Two passes, not one. A visual pass and a thermal pass are flown over the same grid so every anomaly can be pinned to an exact location on the ordinary photo, not just a colour blob on a heat map.
- Radiometric data, not just pretty colours. A proper thermal payload records an actual temperature value per pixel, so a flagged spot comes with a number, not just a guess based on colour intensity.
